BEREAVEMENT

When someone, unfortunately, passes away please contact the Synagogue Office 0151-724 4811 so that arrangements can begin to be made for the Funeral and Shiva.

You will be advised on the actions you need to take. Do not try to contact undertakers or Cemetery officials as they will only take instruction from the Synagogue and rather than speeding things up it can often slow down the process.

Burial are organised to place as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours, as is the Orthodox Jewish Tradition. There are, however, times when this is not possible due to a delay in obtaining a Death Certificate or Registration.

In certain circumstances a death has to, by law, be reported to the Police who often then have to refer to the Coroners Office which can also delay the burial.

In Liverpool we have an excellent relationship with all the various agencies, Council, Registrars, Coroner’s Office etc. all of whom try to expedite matters as quickly as possible for us. That is why, unless asked to do so, all contact should be by the Synagogue officials and NOT members of the family who, with the best will in the world, do not understand the systems, protocols and procedures that are all in place for a reason.
